Well, the CF school board voted all in favor of a "failed approach" .
Many people may begin to question the make up of this board. Do any of them have students in our schools?
Anybody running for school board this fall, need some new blood that represents the very people that vote them in.
We now have a school board that has blindly been approving open enrolled applicants and letting them attend the very school they now say are crowded, but they refuse to address their mistake and instead, move CF Resident students.
Let's make sure we hit them in their wallets, where they make their money. Find a new vet, a new insurance rep. Support is a two way street.
The citizens of Cedar Falls should appeal this decision.
Why would Cedar Falls students be moved out of Hansen while the open enrolled kids get to stay there? There are over a dozen open enrolled students at that school.

This decision is VERY disappointing. Even though my child is now off the list, I still feel strongly that the Board of Education is not supporting our own children and parents.
They have failed to support the "equality" of its' own residents.
It is absolutely mind-boggling to understand their decision—there appears to be no consistent pattern, it all seems very random (now UNI married student housing is being sent from Orchard Hill to the already "overcrowded" Southdale???...why not send them to their own school...NU?) .
They appeased the OE issue by moving a few open enrolled kids but definitely did not make a stance on "standing up" for the people who put them on this board...Cedar Falls residents!
My child may be at the same school this next school year, but what will happen the following year...and the year after that?
As listed on the CFKidsFirst home page, a "recall" of the elected board officials may send a clear message that they have not listened to our appeals...that is, Cedar Falls Kids FIRST...not after open-enrolled children!!

I agree! The CEDAR FALLS school board is elected by CEDAR FALLS residents to represent CEDAR FALLS KIDS FIRST. This decision in no way represents cedar falls kids. it represents open enrolled kids. The petition clearly stated what the cedar falls residents wanted and with over 700 signitures, that is more people than the number that voted most of these people in. We need to find out what these people do for a living an boycot their businesses and recall them from the board. They were not put on this board for this!

Dr. Kenyon is a veterinarian at Cedar Valley Vet. Clinic on First Street.
Dan Battcher works for First National Bank (First Waverly Corp) you can reach that office at 266-2000. He is in Investments
You have the right to stop doing business with those who do not support you and your Cedar Falls kids. Sometimes hitting them in wallet makes a big statement. They might have to work harder and have no time to be a school board member.

The board's vote was very disheartening. The school's "leaders" have lost touch with those they are allegedly representing - a very sad week for Cedar Falls!
My family will be moving out of our beloved CF due to this decision. Is this going to create a trend of open enrolling out of the district?

on the home page of this website are the names and terms of the present school board.
three members' terms are up this year. i understand the election is in september. i agree with banker about hitting them in the wallet. another place to hit them is at the ballot box.
we need some people to step forward and run for these positions on the board who will put "cedar falls kids first!"

I agree with all of the above statements. My kids are not effected now, but who knows when that could change. I am so disappointed in this Boards inability to look at the future trends and do the right thing. It is obvious where the growth trends are. I am not sure of the exact answer, but it will likely involve closing a school and opening a new school in the area of the most growth.
I can not wait for the elections in the Fall. I hope we have some frustrated parents who are willing to step up and run for the school board. We need some fresh people with new ideas.
It is time for a change

We need to thank our school board for the time they donate to our community and ALL our children. I am very sorry that some of you feel the need to leave Cedar Falls because of the school you will or will not be attending. Change is hard but it is also good.
Before you decide to take business away from board members, remember that many of you too have businesses and many of you have said a lot of hurtful things about others. Consider your own wallets and the number of people reading this message board.

They don't seem to be donating their time to THIS community. They seem to be donating their time to open enrolled students. Maybe you should remind the parents of open enrolled students to thank the cedar falls school board.
As far as things that are hurtful, I don't recall anything said about anyone specific. If a board memeber is going to make a decision that goes against the very people he/she was elected to represent, they should be prepared for people being disapointed in that decision. And everyone has the right to express that dissapointment.

All change is hard, but this change is illogical, and therefore not good.

exactly what "hurtful" things have we said? that beaver hills and the ridges had representation on the committe and somehow their areas got passed over? that a petition was signed by nearly a third of the parents representing the elementary children in this city and was ignored and disgarded by the board? that the board felt it is more important for the few dollars more that they get in funding for open enrollment students than for resident students? since this board thinks and makes decisions with their "wallet", perhaps it is time for the residents of cedar falls to do the same. the only children this board appears to be concerned about is open enrollment students, not "ALL" the children in this community.

You people are funny, the only problem most of you have is going to North Cedar, which is a very good school. I know doctors, lawyers, and other professionals that have come from North Cedar. I am sure that many more successful people will come from North Cedar also. Many many hurtful emails have been sent and many hurtful things have been said throughout this process. As for people running for the school board, we don't want pissed off people running, they will just create termoil. As for people buying houses outside of the district, do what you gotta do, who said you will get the school of your choice, the decision is to cap open enrollment. I hope the best for everyone and lets all remember Cedar Falls KIDS First, most of the stuff I am reading is about the PARENTS, not the KIDS.

guest...no one (except you) has said anything on this message board about North Cedar. This isn't about North Cedar (at least not for me) this is about the taxpayers of the community having a priority over those who do not contribute to this community and having their choice of schools (whatever school that may be). If that choice is North Cedar, great, if it isn't fine. But they should have a priority over open enrolled students. That is what this is about, not about any one particular school.
