The school district has purchased land at the west end of Erik Road for a potential new school in the future. I am worried that if they pass a bond issue and update North Cedar, that would preclude construction of a new school there (or anywhere) anytime in the foreseeable future. How does all of this fit together? It seems like the school board and the committee are not on the same page. Anyone have any insight?

I think it is yet another example of fiscal irresponsibility on the part of the school board. It's always easy to throw around other people's money. "Hey, here some land we may want someday, let's just buy it up, and hey, we may need more classrooms at southdale lets just go ahead and build them now even though we can't use them. Shoot, now we are out of money to update N. Cedar, oh well, we'll just ask the people for more money, they are suckers for education"

Maybe they just bought the land because it looked pretty. I mean, haven't they pretty much said that IF they were going to build a new school that really isn't the best location for one and also that they aren't interested in building a new school anytime in the near future. That the six elementary schools we have can more than handle our enrollment? And they don't want to close one at this point.

Per the Minutes dated Feb. 19, 2007: Item #4. The district purchased the land for the purpose of long-range planning in an area of anticipated future growth and development and at a reasonable cost. This land sits next to an additional 20 acres that the city purchased as well. There are no plans by either the city of the school district to begin a planning process for the development of the sites within the next 5 years. My best guess is that they saw an opportunity to purchase a large parcel of land in an area where property costs are escalating. ??
